What is the difference between treatment and recovery?

  • Treatment is a part of the recovery journey by which the individual struggling with substance use disorder (SUD) seeks professional, clinical services to help overcome the chemical dependency of the substance. This may look like detox, inpatient treatment, or intensive outpatient program.
  • Recovery, according to SAMHSA, is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential.
  • This process may or may not utilize treatment throughout the journey.
